Why the most effective method for gaining insight into our own psychology and spirituality is misunderstood
As the sun finally broke over the hills on the horizon, I continued basking in the awe of this experience that is beyond conventional thought or verbal explanation until I was overwhelmed by an enormous question. “Why are the psychedelics so misunderstood in our society?” Nothing I had experienced prior to that night—religion, philosophy, counseling sessions, classes, workshops, prayer, or mediation techniques—had come close to equaling the level of understanding that had just been conveyed to me through the use of these psychoactive cacti over the past 12 hours. The overwhelming question quickly fragmented into a flurry of sub-questions. Why had I and those with whom I had associated been brought up to believe that these hallucinogenic drugs were only dangerous and destructive substances that would fry my brain and inspire me to stand in front of a speeding train or to commit violent acts? Why, in the course of my Christian upbringing, did a priest never deliver a sermon about these plants that could make the abstract concepts he preached more concrete? Why did the countless New Age books I had owned never suggest I explore the vast potential of spiritual clarification via the psychedelic route? Why had I not heard stories in the news about the tremendous potential for personal and collective healing from ingesting these substances? Why is this not an accepted part of psychiatric treatment? Why is our society forbidden by law to explore this powerful tool of self-exploration available to humanity?
